Ekotek Ekotab Encore 2 Quick Review

The Ekotab Encore 2 from Ekotek is the successor to the Ekotab Encore D/L. Improvements include a faster processor, slightly bigger battery, and a newer Android version. Check out our quick review to find out what we think of this device.

Design and Construction

Once you get a hold of the tablet, you’ll be initially impressed of its build. It’s solid with a clean back but a bit chunky. Turning it on is a different story. When the screen powers up, you’ll be greeted by a WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) TFT LCD panel with no proper viewing angle and an Android UI that seems to be not in a proper aspect ratio.

OS, UI, and Apps

Running the tablet is Android 4.4 KitKat, an update over Jelly Bean from its predecessor. First and foremost, this is bare Android, no skins on top but they included some software like an e-book reader, document maker, voice recorder, and file manager. Interestingly, there’s an app that directs to the developer options.

Camera

The 2-megapixel camera is of low quality. They could pass for casual video calling but they won’t be a good shooter for everyday life documentation. Check out the two samples below to check them for yourselves.

Performance and Benchmarks

We did a couple of benchmark test on the tablet and the results were fine for its specification. It managed to do 59.7fps on Nenamark 2 and score a 16,554 on Antutu 5. Real performance with UI navigation is passable with slight hiccups since it only has 512MB of RAM. Basic 3D Gaming can also be done thanks to its quad-core processor running at 1.5GHz with a Mali-400MP2 GPU.

Conclusion

Ekotab Encore 2 will pass as a tablet for those who don’t want to spend much. With a price tag of Php 2,999, it’s a cheap tablet with lots of limitations. If it only has a better screen, it could be a good buy. We would also give a plus point for Ekotek’s decent branding.
