Apple, Samsung plan to put an end to SIM cards

Usually seen as rivals in the market, Apple and Samsung are reported to be in “advanced talks” to discontinue the usual plastic SIM cards that we’re using today, and introduce something they callĀ e-SIM cards.

Financial Times reports that this is so that switching between networks or carriers will be easier for the end users. There will also be announcement on the new embeddable SIM standards in the near future according to GSMA, an industry association that represents mobile operators.

GSMA CEO, Anne Bouverot, states in the report, ” We have got everyone one one point, with Apple and Samsung agreeing to be part of that specification. We have been working with them and others to create an industry solution for machines and will agree a solution for consumer electronics.”

It’s true that having just an electronic SIM card instead of a physical one does make switching between carriers easy, but it also eliminates having to worry about whether your current SIM card will fit on a specific phone as the upgrades seem to be built-in and unremovable.

As to when we could be seeing this new e-SIM cards, it looks like we’ll still be waiting for at least a year from now.
