3,915 seized laptops from customs were given to DepEd

Nearly 4,000 confiscated laptops were turned over to the Department of Education (DepEd) for the betterment of the Alternative Learning System (ALS).

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) was able to seize 3,915 notebook PCs on December of 2011. Under Section 2503 of the Tariffs and Customs Code of the Philippines, these Asus branded notebook PCs should proceed to Philippine government offices.

Around 2,000 of the confiscated notebook PCs, as stated by Education Secretary Br. Luistro FSC, are for ALS teachers who travel to unvisited places to teach out-of-school youth. Aside from that, some of the notebook PCs will be given to ALS centers wherein students can use the computers for their classes.

The Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRMM) Coordinators will receive 500 of the 3,915 notebook PCs as well for improved school mapping during disasters
