Corning Gorilla Glass vs Sapphire Glass

During a recent earnings call at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Corning was asked to compare its Gorilla Glass technology to Sapphire glass which is reported to be featured on Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6.

When asked by James Fawcett of Morgan Stanley if it makes sense for manufacturers to consider Sapphire on their devices, Tony Tripeny of Corning responded saying that they see a lot of disadvantages of Sapphire versus Gorilla Glass.

“When we look at it, we see a lot of disadvantages of Sapphire versus Gorilla Glass. It’s about 10 times more expensive. It’s about 1.6 times heavier. It’s environmentally unfriendly. It takes about 100 times more energy to generate a Sapphire crystal than it does glass. It transmits less light which it means either dimmer devices or shorter battery life. It continues to break. I think while it’s scratch resistant product it still breaks and our testing says that Gorilla Glass, about 2.5 times more pressure that it can take than Sapphire on. So when we look at it, we think from an overall industry and trend that is not attractive in consumer electronics.”

In a nutshell, Gorilla Glass is better than Sapphire, at least from Corning’s perspective. Tripeny did admit, however, that Sapphire’s got “a very sexy name” which is good for marketing.

Corning unveils Anti-Microbial Gorilla Glass

Corning has announced their latest creation called Anti-Microbial Gorilla Glass which has the same scratch-resistant properties of its kin but also keeps your screen germ-free.

The company was able to achieve such feat, by imbuing the film with ionic silver. In theory, this electrically-generated solution kills the bacteria on your device’s screen and prevents it from reproducing.

Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass

As a proof that Corning isn’t just making this stuff up, the company even got their new glass certified by the US Environmental Protection Agency which gave them the right to call their new creation as the “first EPA-registered antimicrobial cover glass”.

If your still a bit cynical about this new glass, you can check out the research conducted by the folks over at ASM (American Society Microbiology) back in 2008 which shows the effect ionic silver on bacteria.

Corning didn’t say which upcoming device will sport their new glass, but we’re guessing that the company won’t have a hard time convincing manufacturers to include this technology on their high-end gadgets.

Corning launches Gorilla Glass NBT for laptops

Corning extends its glass technology to the PC market with the announcement of the Gorilla Glass NBT – the company’s latest cover glass designed to help protect touch-enabled notebook displays from scratches and other forms of damage that come from everyday handling and use.

According to Corning, the Gorilla Glass NBT provides “enhanced scratch resistance, reduced scratch visibility, and better retained strength once a scratch occurs to help protect notebook displays from breakage that can occur with lower-performing soda-lime glass.”

“We are confident that Corning Gorilla Glass NBT will outperform legacy soda-lime glass, delivering eight to 10 times more scratch resistance. In fact, for just 1 to 2 percent of a notebook’s retail price, consumers can now get the best cover glass solution: a Gorilla solution. Simply put, we believe that if you don’t have Gorilla on your device, it’s not as good.” said James R. Steiner, senior vice president and general manager, Corning Specialty Materials.

According to Corning, the Gorilla Glass 3 uses a completely new glass composition with durability enhancements developed at the atomic structural level of the glass. In addition, it uses the new Native Damage Resistance technology which provides “enhanced scratch resistance, reduced scratch visibility, and better retained strength once a scratch occurs.” Simply put, Gorilla Glass 3 is better and tougher than Gorilla Glass 2.

Devices equipped with Gorilla Glass 3 with NDR are expected to be unveiled in mid-2013. Hit the source link below and watch this latest glass technology take a hit from a 175g steel ball.
