Cherry Mobile Omega HD 2X Review

We finally got our hands on one of Cherry Mobile‘s latest offerings, the CM Omega HD 2X. It’s a quad-core Android smartphone that is equipped with an 18-megapixel camera and 5.7-inch full HD 1080p display. Find out what if this is a winner by checking our review below.

Now in its fourth iteration, the Cherry Mobile Omega has certainly come a long way since its first arrival back in January of this year. From having a 5.2-inch WVGA display, dual-core CPU, and 512MB of RAM, it now has a 5.7-inch Full HD display with a quad-core CPU and 2GB of RAM.

Design and Construction

The OHD 2X, with its large display, quickly puts it in the “phablet” category. A smartphone this big would certainly require you to use both hands most of the time, but its sleek and slim form factor makes up for that large footprint.

On hand, the device feels well-made, certainly not premium but it’s solid, no rattling or creaking, and very much likely to survive even if you chuck it on the floor.

As for the design, it’s simple and modest, but as described earlier, it has slim profile. The thin bezel is a big plus, and the glossy metallic frame on the sides and the matte finish at the back feels good to the touch.

Display

The OHD 2X is equipped with a 5.7-inch Full HD (1920 × 1080) display with a pixel density of 386ppi. It also has IPS and OGS to ensure good viewing angles and that the screen really pops out.

Like its predecessors, the OHD 2X comes equipped with Dragontrail glass. If you’ve seen our hands-on of the Omega HD back in March, you’ll know that this glass can resist scratches brought by sharp objects. The same thing holds true on the OHD 2X as I tried scratching it with a screw driver, keys, scissors, and a rock. Not a scratch.

OS, UI, and Apps

Running the whole show for the OHD 2X is Android 4.2.1 Jellybean. Cherry Mobile added a few visual tweaks on it which is evident on the lockscreen.

ohd2x ui_1

The rest looks stock Jellybean but with the addition of Cherry Mobile’s own apps and preinstalled apps like the Cherry Fun Club, Cherry Play, Task Manager, Kakao Talk, Opera browser, and Start (lockscreen manager). These apps cannot be uninstalled so if you’re not going to use them they’ll just sit there eating memory. We wish that Cherry Mobile just keeps everything as stock as possible or allow most of these to be uninstalled.

ohd2x ui_2

The good news is, the OHD 2X comes with 32GB of internal storage with 27.74GB left for the user. Add the support for up to 32GB via microSD and you’re looking at a really large storage space in total.

Camera and Multimedia

The OHD 2X comes equipped with an 18 megapixel BSI rear shooter with LED flash and an 8 megapixel front-facing. Although you’re getting more pixels in a photo, it doesn’t really equate to image quality. The camera captures very decent amount of detail but falls behind in terms of colors as photos tend to be washed out. Check out the sample photos below:

We also noticed that it is weak on Macro shots, a bit slow on autofocus, and is rough when automatically adjusting for exposure. On the bright side, it comes with a number of features like Panorama, HDR, and filters.

ohd2x ui_3

When it comes to video recording, it’s capable of shooting 1080p videos at 19fps and saves it in 3GP format. Take a look at the sample video below:

As for its multimedia prowess, the OHD 2X’s display is a real treat when it comes to watching movies. However, we recommend that you use headphones when listening. Sounds produced by the speaker is crisp but lacks punch. In addition, the speaker gets easily muffled even when placed on a hard flat surface. So if you’re planning to utilize the speaker make sure that you don’t lay it flat on its back.

Performance and Benchmarks

So far we’re satisfied with the OHD 2X’s performance. The 1.5GHz MTK6589T quad-core CPU, PowerVR SGX544MP GPU, and 2GB of RAM did a good job in keeping things zippy. It can play most games but don’t expect it to run smoothly on high graphic settings. Take a look at the benchmark scores below:

* AnTuTu – 15,246
* Quadrant – 4,707
* Vellamo HTML 5 – 1,564
* Vellamo Metal – 552
* NenaMark2 – 33.8fps

Benchmark performance is very similar to the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z.

Battery Life

Powering the OHD 2X is a 2,500mAh battery. Based on our test bench for battery life, it was able to last for 7.7 hours playing a 1080p video file on loop in Airplane mode with brightness set to 50% and volume set to 0%. Just slightly better than the 2,000mAh Cosmos Z.

Conclusion

Let’s sum up all the stuff you’ll be getting from the Omega HD 2X: a large screen size, beautiful display protected by Dragontrail glass, a healthy 32GB of internal storage with microSD support, quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, dual-SIM support, decent battery life, thin profile, and a well-built body. On the downside, it has below average camera performance and a weak speaker with poor placement.

So is this phone worth getting? Based on the pros listed above, the answer is yes. And if you’re looking for a phone that sits on top of the Cosmos line but still won’t break the bank, the Cherry Mobile Omega HD 2X is a good choice.
