Carl Zeiss unveils VR One headset, costs $99

Carl Zeiss, a company known for quality optics, has unveiled the VR One, an affordable virtual reality headset that uses your smartphone’s display.

The Carl Zeiss VR One works similar to Samsung’s Gear VR and Google’s Cardboard as it needs a smartphone to be its primary display. The VR One will utilize custom smartphone trays to accommodate those with display sizes between 4.7 and 5.2 inches. For now, trays for the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S5 are the only ones available.

The black and white body is made of durable polycarbonate material and sports a dark transparent shield on the front to keep the smartphone’s rear camera remain fully usable.

The VR One only has two apps for now, the VR ONE Media and VR ONE AR, which are downloadable on iTunes and Google Play stores. An open source SDK will be soon be available for developers should they wish to make their own apps for the VR One.

The Carl Zeiss VR One is now up for pre-order in the U.S. and in Europe for $99 / €99. Pre-orders for Asia will soon be available as well.
