OPPO R7 Plus Review

Locally launched just last week, the OPPO R7 Plus is obviously the bigger brother to the R7 Lite and packs rather heavy internals. With an edge-to-edge AMOLED display, Snapdragon octa-core CPU, and 4,100mAh of battery, how would this midrange phablet fare for daily use? Read on and find out.

We have a video version of this review that shows the R7 Plus up close. It shows more of the device like its display quality as well as the responsiveness of the UI.

Design and Construction

The OPPO R7 Plus has a large display spanning 6 inches across. Three on-screen buttons are implemented here, which is good news since they all light up. From this angle, the handset slightly resembles an HTC device due to the borders above and below the screen.

Up top we have the 8-megapixel front-facing camera along with the notification light and speaker for calls. You can see that bezels around the display are thin enough to try and make the images seem to pop out more.

Volume rocker is placed on the left strip and on the upper half of the device. This makes it easy and comfortable to reach even when operating the phone with one hand.

On the other side, we have the tray that accommodates dual-SIM cards and the main Power/lock screen button that goes along with it. One odd implementation here is that you can opt to use the second SIM slot as expandable storage using microSD card. It could support up to 128GB but you lose the dual-SIM functionality.

We have the 3.5mm audio jack at the top for connecting audio devices.

Down under, a microUSB port for charging and transferring files sits alone at the center.

The back features an all-metal build and exudes premium quality on the first glance and more so when held.

Situated right smack in the middle are the 13MP rear camera, dual-LED flash, laser autofocus, and the fingerprint sensor accented with chrome trimmings. Lastly, the company’s logo sits proudly below all these.

At 7.8mm, the R7 Plus is thin enough to be held securely, although it’s a bit hefty at 192 grams. This could both be a good and a bad thing depending on the user. For me, I personally prefer having a bit of chunk on my phone so it won’t be too light to escape my hands during handling.

Its form factor has been carefully crafted and implements rounded edges rather than cornered ones. This is very much appreciated since it not only makes the device pleasing to the eyes but also feels nice to hold as a whole.

Although due to its large physique, it takes a lot of effort to operate it using one hand (and I already have bigger than average hands). This made us resort to using both hands while using it.

Display and Multimedia

The R7 Plus boasts an edge-to-edge AMOLED screen spanning 6 inches across. A Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution then fills the entire display which results to a healthy 367ppi count. Protecting all that and layered on top is Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 to make sure the screen is protected from scratches and minor shocks.

Images, text, and colors are very vibrant and lively on this display — which is pretty close to the overall look of the Galaxy flagships. Blacks were truly blacks and that matters a lot when you’re watching movies. Speaking of movies, it was quite enjoyable to play videos on its spacious 6-inch screen.

What we noticed, though, was that its screen was too glossy that a simple glare would reflect too much light that you no longer see the content of the display.

The speaker, although not sizeable, provides impressive volume with good details on the lows. This has not been the case for most midrange smartphones and we usually just hear decent mids and highs, but the R7 Plus gave off a decent mixture of sound after playing a number of tracks.
