Eyes-on: ASUS FonePad Note FHD 6

It’s a small tablet. No, it’s gargantuan smartphone. Whatever and however you wanna describe it, the new ASUS FonePad Note FHD 6 is one fascinating phablet which we think is slated to be the affordable alternative for the upcoming SGN3.

The six hundred pound gorilla in the room here is the concept behind the new FonePad Note which is undeniably inspired by the Galaxy Note lineup. We’ll look in to this aspect more closely in a separate post (Why FonePad Note makes sense), but for now let’s get acquainted with some of the stylus-touting device’s features.

The ASUS FonePad Note is not something we’d consider as a premium device right on the onset, at least from the design standpoint that is. This is mainly due to the plastic make of the device which constitutes for a good portion of the device. There’s a silver-coated lining which runs on the side of the handset that separates the front and back portion, but even that doesn’t help in giving the FonePad Note an appealing look.

There’s a flap on the left side of the oversized handset that we mistook for the volume rocker. It houses the slots for the Micro-SIM card and Micro-SD card. Over to the other side is a trio of buttons for Power and Volume controls.

At the top is where the 3.5mm audio port is located, isolated from other components. The same goes for the micro-USB port which sits at the chin of the FonePad Note. The 6-inch 1080p display occupies a good portion of the real estate on the front flanked by a pair of speaker grills on each side (when held in landscape).

There’s not much to be seen on the back side apart from the 8MP main camera which is surrounded by a glossy back panel. For occasional (or sometimes habitual) selfies and video chat needs, the FonePad Note is also equipped with a 1.2MP camera on the front.

Asus Fonepad Note FHD6 specs:
6.0-inch IPS+ full HD display @ 1920×1080 pixels, 367ppi
Intel Atom Z2560 1.6GHz dual-core processor
PowerVR SGX544 MP2 GPU
2GB DDR2 RAM
16GB, 32GB internal storage
up to 64GB via microSD
3G/HSPA+ up to 42Mbps
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, WiFi Direct
Bluetooth 3.0
8MP autofocus rear camera
1.2MP front-facing camera
GPS w/ aGPS support
Li-Ion 3200mAh battery
Android 4.2 Jellybean

This device runs on Android Jellybean right out of the gate which is handled by a dual-core Intel Atom processor and 2GB of RAM. We have high hopes for this setup in terms of performance and battery consumption as we we’re blown away with the first ASUS FonePad.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do a hands-on with the device because there were no available demo units during the event so we can’t tell for sure how the processor –RAM combo’s performance. We guess we just have to wait for our next second encounter with the ASUS FonePad Note then.
