Google’s new acquisition DeepMind costs $400M

Google has been purchasing a lot of companies recently and the newest one is DeepMind, an artificial intelligence company.

DeepMind, as described in their landing page, “is a cutting edge artificial intelligence company. We combine the best techniques from machine learning and systems neuroscience to build powerful general-purpose learning algorithms.”

The purpose of the acquisition is to fill in more AI experts to Google. It was reported that it was even led by Google’s CEO himself, Larry Page. December last year, Google also hired Ray Kurzweil, an inventor and futurist, as director of engineering focused on language processing and machine learning.

Google is not the only major company who is working on AI that actually learns and thinks for itself. Facebook, Yahoo, and IBM with its Watson supercomputer is also reported to be working on their own.

DeepMind was founded by neuroscientist Demis Hassabis, Skype and Kaaza developer Jaan Tallin and researcher Shane Legg.
