Over 900 million Android phones affected by QuadRooter flaw

A new flaw called QuadRooter has been identified by researchers at security firm Check Point revealing a set of four vulnerabilities on Qualcomm-powered handsets. It’s been reported that over 900 million Android phones are affected including BlackBerry’s DTEK50 which claimed to be the most secure Android smartphone.

Apart from DTEK50, Google’s Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, and Nexus 6P are also affected as well as the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge — even my personal LG V10 is also at risk.

Once exploited, this flaw grants attackers full access to the phone (or tablet) including the camera and microphone and could get expose private information. Google has released a QuadRooter Scanner app to know if these vulnerabilities exist on your device but it doesn’t really do anything to prevent it.

However, all is not lost when you find out that your device is affected by this flaw. For attackers to fully take control of your handset, they must still trick you, the user, to install a malicious app that wouldn’t require any special permissions.

This means that you have to be careful with the apps that you install and give permission to access your phone.

So far, a fix is available by updating your system software from manufacturers since Qualcomm has already issued patches for the three out of four flaws — with the last one coming this September.

The bottom line is that we have to stay vigilant and keep an eye out for suspicious programs asking for permission to gain access to the contents of our devices.

Google introduces Nearby, location-based app suggestions

Just when we thought that apps couldn’t be more bothersome to be downloaded for single use, Google has introduced a new service that’s coming soon on your mobile. It’s called Nearby and the name itself will give some answers on how it works.

united-nearby

Since Play Store apps are mostly created for use in specific locations or situations, as per Google’s blog post, the Nearby feature will use your current coordinates and Bluetooth connectivity to push app suggestions depending on your location. For example, you’re in a museum and to make your visit more trivial, it will buzz you a related app. Or, while waiting for your flight, the airline’s app will be suggested for download just in case you want it.

And if you have a Google Cast or Android Wear device around, it can push the notification to the wearable and a single tap can accept the request.

Nearby is part of the upcoming Google Play Services update and will work on Android 4.4 KitKat and above.

T-Pain’s auto-tuned voice will guide you through traffic

There have been a lot of famous identities that gave their voice as assistants for the traffic navigation app Waze. Now, it’s time to auto-tune your way through EDSA since T-Pain is here to give you a heads-up of the latest events on the road.

We remember T-Pain as the artist that popularized the auto-tune effect applied to the voice to have that robotic effect. We’ve also seen T-Pain appear in hit tracks like “I’m on a Boat”.

To get him to start telling you where the next police is, simply open your Waze app and head to the settings menu and look for Sound>Navigation Guidance. From the selection, hit T-Pain and the app will begin to download the new prompts.

Of course, it’s better  to do all that at home and download thru Wi-Fi than while driving — saves both data and is way safer.
