Lenovo A7000 vs. Alcatel Flash Plus vs. Zenfone 2

The sub-Php8k price range for smarpthones is become more and more interesting as players continue to offer very cost-effective handsets. Three of the contenders are the Lenovo A7000, Alcatel Flash Plus and the Zenfone 2 ZE500CL — all of which are priced below the Php8,000 mark.

The sub-Php8,000 price point is projected to be the category with the biggest growth as it offers a balance between price and hardware with very little compromise.

The Alcatel Flash Plus comes in both gold and slate colors. However, the color variant that will arrive in the Philippines will be the slate color.

The internal storage is only limited to 16GB and there’s no 32GB available. Likewise, both the SIM card slots have LTE capability but only one can activate mobile internet at a time.

The 3,500mAh battery is non-removable. Access to the SIM card and microSD card are doen thru the side slots covered with polycarbonate flaps.

The Mediatek octa-core chip is under-clocked to a maximum of 1.5GHz per core (our sample unit runs at 1.7GHz). This will help improve battery life. During our testing, we got a very solid 13.5 hours of video playback in our test bench.

Here is the screenshot of the actual specs from the shipped units.

The 13-megapixel camera also has a fixed aperture of f2.2. Here are the sample photos we took earlier.

The Alcatel Flash Plus will be available exclusively thru Lazada (Lazada is the sole importer and distributor) on May 15 for Php6,490.

Alcatel Flash Plus to sell for Php6,490 on May 15

We’ve finally gotten final word about the release date and the suggested retail price of the Alcatel One Touch Flash Plus. This, after several inquiries and follow-up with the vendor in the last several weeks.

While our original release stated a target date of May 1, 2015 and a suggested retail price of Php6,990, nothing is really final until all things are cleared from different stakeholders (customs, NTC, distributor, vendor).

As such, the original plan was revised.

The release date is now scheduled for May 15. Lazada will still have exclusive distribution rights (for the first 3 months) so there will be no inventory in shops and kiosks until after August 15, 2015.

Lazada will formally announce the sale on May 12 during a media release.

The final SRP is pegged at Php6,490 for the 16GB model. Only the slate color will be released on the first batch.

You can read about our first impressions and benchmark results here.

Author’s Note: We were consulted by Alcatel as to the SRP of the Flash Plus and we gave 3 price points, Php6,990 being the highest SRP of all 3 suggestions. They gave us permission to report the Php6,990 price. This is the reason why we published Php6,990 in our previous stories — and, in case they changed their minds afterwards after we repeatedly urged them to go lower, the final SRP will still be below what we reported.

Alcatel Flash Plus will be sold exclusively on Lazada

We received information from a regional source that Alcatel has struck a 3-month deal with Lazada to distribute the Alcatel Flash Plus in the Philippines when it is released here in the Philippines this May.

This means from May to July, interested buyers may only source the Alcatel Flash Plus from Lazada (via credit card or Cash-on-Delivery). It will then be available in open channel afterwards.

Lazada has committed several thousand units of the Flash Plus during the launch date. The suggested retail price is pegged at Php6,990 based on insider source.
