AKG Y40 On-Ear Headphones Quick Review

Lazada Philippines

Looking for a pair of cans that is easy on the eyes and ears without hurting your pockets? Then you might want to take a look at the AKG Y40 On-Ear Headphones. It has a 3DAxis folding mechanism, 40mm drivers, detachable cable with in-line universal mic/remote, and Taxi Yellow color. Find out what we think of the headphones by reading our quick review below.

The first thing we noticed about the AKG Y40 is its color. The Taxi Yellow model is eye-catching and blends well with the black parts. It is mostly made of plastic but sturdy. The headband is smooth and rubbery which feels nice. Underneath it is a leatherette padding to make sure it’s comfortable on the head.

For the cups, the outer part bears the AKG branding and has a concentric circles texture around it. The base is then accented by a glossy yellow ring. On the other side are leatherette paddings with nylon meshes at the center printed with L and R to indicate which side is for the left and right ear.

Both cups are attached to a swivel which allows you to turn the cups up to 90-degrees. The swivel is then attached to a folding mechanism so you can fold the cups in for easy storage. When worn, the AKG Y40 will easily fit most people as the headband is adjustable and reinforced by stainless steel. Overall, it is light, sturdy, and comfortable to wear.

The Y40 connects to your music player via the detachable audio cable which connects to the jack under the left cup. It features a universal one-button remote/microphone. Nothing special on this part and works fine on our Android device however it feels really cheap and creaky. The volume buttons feel inconsistent as well as the Volume Up button is clicky while the Volume Down is not.

Sound performance is okay on the Y40. Loudness is decent though we found ourselves cranking the volume above 75% just to feel its power. Quality is a biased towards bass which is not really bad if you’re playing club and hip hop music. However the Y40 tends to carry that bias when it comes to the higher parts of the spectrum.

As a result the mids and highs do not get enough emphasis and end up sounding blanketed. If your playlist is dominated by rock and acoustic music expect them to be lacking in treble and crispiness.

To sum it up, the AKG Y40 is a cool-looking pair of headphones that aims to please bass lovers with a limited budget. It packs a good punch when it comes to lows but not so much on mids and highs. It doesn’t offer well-balanced sounds but if you like your tracks bassy or mostly listen to club and hip hop music, then the Y40 is a decent headphone to have.
