NBI Arrests Fixers Who Ask Payment to Process NBI Clearance Online

As the old adage goes, if there’s a will, there’s a way. That was certainly the case as fixers adapt to the new online NBI Clearance application as they now come equipped with wireless hotspots and tablets and are ready to take payments from non-tech savvy citizens who wants to process an NBI Clearance.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) cracked down on this new modus operandi and arrested these fixers who are asking Php50 fee from unsuspecting victim to have their NBI Clearance application processed. Do note that the new online application for NBI clearance is free of charge as stated on our previous report.

To be frank though, it isn’t all that hard for the NBI to identify these fixers considering that most of them are just staying in front of the NBI compound, complete with their own signage and are actively calling out potential customers.

In their defense, the vendors claim that they are not fixers and stated that they are just helping out NBI clearance applicants by offering their “service”. They also claim that they were only asking for a fee to cover for their expenses such as paying for mobile internet that enables them to “help” applicants.

NBI spokesman Nick Suarez reiterated that the new online process is free for all and that the agency is offering free Wi-Fi access inside the NBI facilities. He added that computers are also available inside the NBI compound which eliminates the need for applicants to resort to fixers.

Press Renders of Asus ZenPad Leaked Ahead of Launch

Asus Philippines has recently posted a teaser on their Facebook page of their upcoming device. Obviously, the teaser didn’t reveal much about the product that is said to be launched in this year’s Computex, but the folks over at Ausdroid got a hold of a pair of press renders that reveals what the Taiwanese company has in store.

Below are two press renders of the yet-to-be-announced tablet that goes by the name of “Asus ZenPad”. Prior to this leak, some key information about the ZenPad were revealed after the tablet passed through FCC for certification.

The ZenPad will allegedly come in two models based on the screen size – the ZenPad 7 which sports 7-inch display with a 1024 x 600 resolution and the ZenPad 8 which features a bigger and more pixel-packed 8-inch QXGA (2048 x 1536) resolution. Both of these models have a 4:3 aspect ratio which is evident on the square-ish form factor seen on the press render above.

Apart from the difference in screen size, the two ZenPads will allegedly feature different hardware configuration. The more value-oriented of the two, the ZenPad 7, is expected to run on any of the three processors under the new Intel Atom x3 lineup which is backed by 1GB of RAM and 8GB or 16GB internal storage.

A 3G-provisioned model of the ZenPad 7 (Z170CG) will also be offered alongside the Z170C.

Meanwhile, the ZenPad 8 and its data-enabled sibling will be powered by either Intel Atom Z3560 or Z3530 processor with 2GB of RAM and up to 64GB of internal storage.

The ZenPad 8 will have the same design of the ZenPad 7 which features an all-screen façade with a rear panel coated in a soft touch finish and a strip of leather on the right side.

The new Asus ZenPad tablets are expected to be unveiled on June 1, in time for Computex 2015.

Hyundai Sonata 2015: First Car with Android Auto

One of the highlights of last year’s Google I/O conference is the formal unveiling of Android Auto – a voice-assisted platform that can be synced to a supported vehicle which would allow drivers to do simple tasks without having to take their hands off the wheel.

Nearly a year after its official launch, the first ever production car to feature Google’s software-based technology is the Hyundai Sonata 2015.

With the help of Android Auto, new and existing owners of Hyundai Sonata 2015 with Navigation can tether their supported device running on Android Lollipop to their car and cast information such as notification, card-based Google Now suggestions and weather report from the device to the car’s LCD panel.

On top of that, Android Auto will allow users to perform simple tasks like search for places using Google Maps, respond to an email, SMS or voice calls solely using their voice. This will minimize the instances where the driver will have to reach for their smartphone while driving, thus limiting the possibility of accidents.

The Android Auto will be available for specific models of Hyundai Sonata 2015 (listed below) which has an 8-inch touchscreen display.

Sonata Eco
Sonata Limited
Sonata Sport 2.0T
Sonata Limited 2.0T

According to the press release, existing Hyundai Sonata 2015 owners can visit their dealers to have their car updated to enable Android Auto feature starting today. It’s unclear though if that applies to local car owners.

The software update will eventually be available online on this link later this year. This will allow existing 2015 Sonata owners to perform the update themselves.
