DOJ issues advisory on online shopping fraud

The Department of Justice (DOJ) – Office of Cybercrime (OOC) has issued an advisory to inform online shoppers of the risks involved in dealing online and how to protect themselves from online shopping fraud.

Below are the tips the DOJ-OOC has provided to protect consumers from online shopping fraud:

* Keep security software and firewalls up-to-date.
* Update your internet browser as and when a new patch is released.
* Research a seller before making an online purchase. Independently verify their contact details and other company information.
* Invest the time to read all details of an offer to sell.
* Be wary of unsolicited emails from online businesses that you do not know.
* Use strong passwords, which contain a combination of letters, numbers and other characters. Change them regularly and use different passwords for different online accounts.
* Read and understand the seller’s terms and conditions and privacy policies.
* Check that a green padlock symbol is displayed either in the bottom right-hand corner of the webpage or in the address bar and verify the same.
* Be vigilant in transmitting financial and personal information. Avoid unsecure channels like public Wi-Fi, email, phone calls, or mobile messaging.

The DOJ-OOC has also posted steps to take before you make your purchase online and warned of other types of online fraud like fake websites, online auction scams, weight loss or medicine scams, and phishing emails.

Facebook announces Internet.org Platform

Facebook has announced the Internet.org Platform which allows any company, mobile operator, or developer to join the initiative and bring free basic internet services to the people.

For the unacquainted, Facebook’s Internet.org is a partnership between governments, mobile operators, and companies that aim to provide users with free access to basic internet services and websites. In the Philippines, it launched in March 2015 in partnership with Smart. However, not all websites can be accessed through Internet.org and that is because not all websites are very simple and data efficient enough to be offered for free by mobile operators.

Facebook wants to change that by introducing the Internet.org Platform, an open program where any mobile operator, company, or developer can join and create services that integrate with Internet.org. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg also added that no company pays to be included in Internet.org and that no operator is paid to offer these services. For the user, this means that more websites can be accessed through Internet.org in the near future.

“This will give people even more choice, and more free services while still creating a sustainable economic model to connect every single person in the world.” Zuckerberg said.

Mobile operators, companies, and developers who want to join Internet.org just need to follow the initiative’s guidelines. Anyone who meets the guidelines will be able to participate.
