7 business groups speak out: ‘Let chips fall where they may’

SEVEN MAJOR business chambers and associations on Wednesday issued a carefully but strongly worded joint statement expressed “utmost respect and sympathies” to the families of the policemen, Moro fighters, civilians who died in Mamasapano, Maguindao last month.

At the same time, they joined the national clamor for “truth and accountability” for the incident, and urged President Aquino and all parties involved “to put the peace process back on track at the earliest time possible.”

“It seems inevitable,” however, “that President Aquino, as Commander-in-Chief, ultimately will have no choice but to render a full accounting on Mamasapano to the Filipino people.”

“Let the chips fall where they may, but too much is at stake for silence to be invoked for the protection of old friends and allies,” they added.

“Only with a full and satisfactory accounting will justice be possible, and only after justice has been satisfied can the peace process get back on track based on the trust and confidence that is needed of both parties.”

The groups spurned calls by some politicians for an all-out war in Mindanao,” saying citizens must “not allow political manipulation to take advantage of legitimate emotion and grief to the point of trumping reason and endangering the gains we have made over the last few years.”

“In the midst of national mourning,” they lamented, “certain sectors and political players have openly called for all-out war in Mindanao, branded our brother and sister Muslim Filipinos as terrorists, cast doubt on the Bangsamoro Peace Process and the sincerity of the negotiators, and vigorously demanded the resignation of the President.”

“As members of the Philippine business community we do not and will not support such calls. WE CALL INSTEAD FOR SOBRIETY, COURAGE, AND UNITY.”

The full text of the statement signed by the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc., Employers Confederation of the Philippines, Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines, Makati Business Club, Management Association of the Philippines, Mindanao Business Council, and Philippine Business for Social Progress follows:

A TIME FOR SOBRIETY, COURAGE, AND UNITY

We, the undersigned business organizations, express our utmost respect and sympathies for the families of the gallant policemen of the PNP Special Action Force, as we extend our sympathies to the families of our brother Muslim Filipinos and the innocent civilians who perished as a result of the tragic encounter at Mamasapano, Maguindanao. We join the Filipino people in our grief over this tragedy and in the call for truth and accountability over this incident.

In the midst of national mourning, certain sectors and political players have openly called for all-out war in Mindanao, branded our brother and sister Muslim Filipinos as terrorists, cast doubt on the Bangsamoro Peace Process and the sincerity of the negotiators, and vigorously demanded the resignation of the President.

As members of the Philippine business community we do not and will not support such calls. WE CALL INSTEAD FOR SOBRIETY, COURAGE, AND UNITY.

The Philippines has achieved much under the stewardship of President Aquino and his government: The administration’s credible campaign to restore integrity and good governance has gained traction and the respect not only of Philippine business but also the international investment community. Our conduct of international diplomacy and our insistence on the settlement of disputes through the rule of law have gained for our country unprecedented admiration and respect in the community of nations. From being Asia’s perpetual laggard in the last decade, we are now among the region’s fastest growing countries and our rapidly expanding economy is now the envy of our neighbors. Once ignored by international investors and tourists, we have re-established ourselves as an attractive business and leisure destination. From a people cynical and lethargic at our lack of progress and purpose, Filipinos are once again vigilant and assertive in national discourse.

We must not allow political manipulation to take advantage of legitimate emotion and grief to the point of trumping reason and endangering the gains we have made over the last few years. Rather than foster division among ourselves, we must channel our energies and efforts towards unity, reconciliation, and a genuine search for the truth, fully insulated from selfish political agendas.

We reaffirm our support for the Aquino administration and the Bangsamoro Peace Process. There is no other answer to the aspirations of the Bangsamoro people but total and lasting peace. It is in this context that we appeal to the Aquino administration and all parties involved to put the peace process back on track at the earliest time possible.

We fully realise, however, that the facts surrounding Mamasapano must still be satisfactorily established and justice must be dispensed where it is due. We therefore appeal to all the parties conducting inquiries— the PNP, the AFP, the MILF, the DOJ and both houses of Congress— to complete their inquiries at the earliest time possible and render their reports to the nation. Whether these inquiries will lead to clear conclusions and the satisfactory dispensation of justice, or simply add even more to the prevailing anger and confusion, only time will tell. It, however, seems inevitable that President Aquino, as Commander-in-Chief, ultimately will have no choice but to render a full accounting on Mamasapano to the Filipino people. Let the chips fall where they may, but too much is at stake for silence to be invoked for the protection of old friends and allies. Only with a full and satisfactory accounting will justice be possible, and only after justice has been satisfied can the peace process get back on track based on the trust and confidence that is needed of both parties.

At a critical juncture in our history, we have a golden opportunity to preserve our gains and use them as a platform to put the country on an irreversible path towards inclusive development and political maturity. We cannot afford to squander 56 months of institutionalizing reforms, weeding out corruption, and solidifying our economic and social foundations.

Let us move forward with sobriety and courage as one united Filipino nation in search of Justice and Peace.

Telco points “Kill Switch” is device manufacturers’ responsibility

The recent issue on “Kill Switch” being pushed by the Department of Justice is aimed to protect security and privacy of mobile phone users. Globe has responded that the idea is a good one and has been in practice in the US. However, they point out that it’s the primary duty of the phone manufacturers rather than the telcos.

No more legislation is required for this kill switch measure to be implemented, according to Sec. de Lima.

The “kill switch” serves as an emergency stop or safety mechanism to shut off devices and erase its memory from a distance in cases when they are lost or stolen.

This mechanism will also deter theft as the device will be unusable once the kill switch is activated.

Globe Telecom pointed out that the issue of “Kill Switch” is primarily a responsibility of the device manufacturers and not the telco providers.

Yoly Crisanto, Globe SVP for Corporate Communications, said that device manufacturers should enable its smartphone devices to have the “Kill Switch” feature.

“If telcos will be given the mandate, but the smartphone devices are not enabled, we will need an additional layer of security such as a security app to remove data on the device,” Crisanto said. “Also, it is important that this be done by the customer themselves so an opt-in feature is necessary.”

Crisanto revealed that telcos today are capable of disabling a reported stolen mobile device systematically through its IMEI number. This function is used by the network to identify the devices but not wiping-out data stored in the phone.

“When a stolen mobile phone purchased from Globe is reported by a customer, we already have a process of immediately disabling the device through our system using its IMEI number but we don’t wipe-out data stored in the phone which is device based,” she said. “We do this only with devices purchased from us,” she added.

She also calls on mobile phone users to proactively secure their devices from theft by familiarizing themselves with the built-in features. “Latest Android phones like Samsung have already added two anti-theft features such as the “Find My Mobile and “Reactivation Lock” while Apple’s IOS has a tool called “Find My iPhone” which can wipe-out data,” she said.

In the US, it took a year for all 13 companies comprised of mobile phone manufacturers and telco providers to agree to offer the Kill Switch technology which will be implemented by mid of 2015 that would allow customers to wipe data from their devices remotely and render them inoperable when stolen.

Smartphones running on iOS and Android have built-in features that allow for remote location and remote wipe of data but those features need to be manually activated. The “Kill Switch” feature pre-activates this feature prior to shipping and will included even non-smartphone devices.

We hope device manufacturers also make the initiative and cooperate will all local telcos to make this a standard in all handsets released in the country.

Sol Republic TKDK Tracks HD V10 Headphones Review

Headphones are not just about audio, it’s also about design and looks that’s why they come in different styles to fit the wearer’s personality and preferences. Some are simple and subtle while others are expressive and asks for attention. The Sol Republic TKDK Tracks HD V10 fits the latter description. Find out what we think of these cans by reading our review.

Design and Construction

Like what was mentioned earlier, the Sol Republic TKDK (Tokidoki – Japanese for “Sometimes”) is graphic and expressive, that’s why the first thing you’ll notice about it is its looks. It sports a purple and black theme and features a Japanese-inspired graffiti artwork on the headband which would appeal more to the feminine audience.

Being a stylish headphone, one of the Sol Republic TKDK’s main feature is the interchangeable headband. Sol Republic has been releasing Limited Edition headbands which lets users purchase a new design to give their old pair a fresh look every now and then.

The headband is made of tough but flexible transparent plastic with soft leatherette padding underneath. It attaches to the cups through a couple of slots which then holds the band firmly in place yet still allows the user to adjust the headband to his/her liking.

The cups feature what Sol Republic calls the SonicSoft Speaker Pads which are firm but comfortable on the ears. The middle part is made of plastic with matte finish while the exterior is metallic and is cool to the touch. Both cups have headphone jacks underneath to accommodate the left and right 2.5mm connectors.

When worn, the headphones feels comfortable and light. The cups clasps firmly on the ears which makes it effective in blocking external noise while the padding under the band doesn’t exert too much pressure on the head.

It feels wide on the head though and wobbles if you move around too much. So if you’re planning to bang your head or jump around in tune to the beats, it’s not going to stay in place for too long.

Sound Quality

The Sol Republic TKDK boasts what it calls a V10 HD Sound Engine and we’ll tell you straight away that it is biased towards lows. Its capable of producing powerful bass that is punchy and full which is very evident when you’re playing club and hip hop music. So if your playlist is dominated by those types of tracks, then you’re in good hands. However, we cannot say the same thing when it comes to delivering the upper parts of the spectrum. Mids are good but the highs are weak and short on dynamics.

When playing rock music like ones from AC/DC and Kings of Leon, we noticed that it lacks brilliance and edginess. Vocals are not as articulate as we want them to be and there are also moments when tracks feel blanketed. Stay away from the TKDK if you’re very critical about the quality of your rock or acoustic music.

The TKDK also comes with an inline mic with controls which is optimized for Apple devices. It works with Android too but we noticed that only the play/pause/skip button works on my device. We also used the TKDK for receiving calls and so far it works well. Call quality is good and the person on the other line had no problems hearing us.

Conclusion

The Sol Republic TKDK is one of the most eye-catching headphones we’ve come across. It has an energetic design which should appeal mostly to young people. The interchangeable headbands is also great feature as you can swap it if you want to sport a new look. It’s pricey though at almost Php10k given its sound performance. Sound-wise, it falls short when it comes to rock music or anything that needs emphasis on highs. On the bright side, it’s optimized for bassy music like club, party, or hip hop music and the TKDK delivers those tracks well.

The Sol Republic TKDK has a price tag of Php9,500 and is available at the following Astroplus, Astrovision stores: SM Aura Premier, SM Mall of Asia, VMall Greenhills, Glorietta 2, Greenbelt 5. Landmark Department Store Makati, Pismo Digital Lifestyle store in Shangri-la Mall.

What we liked about it:
* Artistic design
* Flexible and interchangeable headband
* Light and comfortable
* Good bass production
* Features in-line mic with controls
* Comes with carrying pouch

What we didn’t like:
* Too wide when worn
* Weak highs
* Pricey
