Cherry Mobile One First Impressions

Along with MyPhone, Cherry Mobile is one of the first two local brands that partnered with Google to spearhead the Android One initiative in the Philippines, and their first Android One smartphone is conveniently called the Cherry Mobile One.

Cherry Mobile One

Unlike its local Android One counterpart from MyPhone, the CM One has a more straightforward candybar design that shares a slight semblance to the Xiaomi RedMi 1S minus the tree illuminated capacitive buttons.

Similar to the MyPhone Uno, the CM One sports a 4.5-inch display which is surrounded by thick black bezels. A front-facing snapper with 2-megapixel resolution is located at the top which is neighbored by a circular earpiece.

Cherry Mobile went for a two-toned paintjob on the One which, in our opinion, adds a hint of class to the device. In addition to that, a thin strip of glossy plastic that frames the front panel of the handset helped in creating a clear separation between the front and back portions of the device.

The Power button is placed on the right hand of the handset just beside the Volume Up and Volume Down keys. Meanwhile, the audio port is located at the top-left portion while the Micro-USB port is situated dead-center of the handset’s bottom panel.

The somewhat curved design of the Cherry Mobile One made it easy to pick the phone up when it’s lying on its back and feels very good in the hands. It’s good to note though that the smartphone doesn’t lay totally flat on its back because of the slightly protruding 5MP rear camera, but not as much compared to the one found on the MyPhone Uno.

Although we prefer the finish of the MyPhone Uno despite of being a fingerprint-magnet (black varirant), the smooth surface of the smartphone’s removable back cover is still commendable because it didn’t make the device look cheap and it provides just enough traction for it not to slip on our hands when held.

1.3GHz MediaTek MTK6582m quad-core CPU
1GB RAM

Dual-SIM, Dual-Standby (micro)
3G HSPA+
WiFi
Bluetooth

FM Radio
1700mAh lithium-ion battery
Android 5.1 Lollipop

Since there’s really no clear difference between the two Android One smartphones, we feel that it will just boil down to the consumer’s design preference. Although we feel that MyPhone has a slight advantage over the Cherry Mobile One in the design segment, we won’t be surprised to see consumers pick the latter because of its no-frill design.

The official SRP of the Cherry Mobile One hasn’t been disclosed at the time of writing, albeit it will be offered by Smart under Plan 499.

Hands-on with the MyPhone Uno

We go hands on with new MyPhone Uno – one of the two smartphones that were launched earlier as part of the Android One campaign.

MyPhone Uno

Despite having near-identical specification as the Cherry Mobile One, MyPhone has a slightly different approach as far as design and choice of material for its exterior are concerned.

When viewed head on, the MyPhone Uno reminded us of the Google Nexus S with its minimalist design with rounded corners sans the slightly curved oleophobic display and glossy back cover. Instead, the smartphone sports a flat front panel that’s mostly occupied by its 4.5-inch IPS display bordered by relatively thick bezels at the top and bottom portions.

We were ok with the thick bezel at the top since it houses the handset’s 2MP selfie camera and the earpiece, but since the smartphone makes use of on-screen buttons, we can’t really justify the thick bezel at the bottom.

The usual ports and buttons are placed where you’d typically expect them to be; audio jack at the top-left, Micro-USB and microphone pin hole at the bottom, volume rocker at the right hand side which are neighbored by the Power button.

Moving on to the back of the device, there’s a round speaker grill at the bottom which sits just below the Android One logo. The 5-megapixel rear camera and its accompanying flash unit are situated at the top-left corner of the device. These components are slightly protruded and are emblazoned with brushed metal for extra flare.

The MyPhone Uno comes in Black and White colors. The latter has a soft matte finish to it, while the Black variant has a smooth rubberized finish which, sadly, attracts fingerprints and smudges like there’s no tomorrow.

Prying the removable back plate open will reveal the usual suspects which include a pair of Micro-SIM slots, a Micro-SD card slot which is pre-populated with the free 8GB MicroSD card courtesy of MyPhone, and the handset’s removable 1700mAh battery.

MyPhone Uno specs:

4.5-inch IPS LCD display, 854×480 @217ppi
1.3GHz quad-core processor
1GB RAM
Expandable 4GB internal storage
Supports up to 32GB MicroSD card
Dual-SIM, Dual Standby
3G/HSPA+
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth
5-megapixel rear camera with flash
2 megapixel front camera
Removable 1700mAh battery
Android Lollipop

Based on our time with the MyPhone Uno, we think that the local brand was able to deliver on the promise of Android One platform which is to provide a decent smartphone, both internally and physically, at an affordable price point.

That’s it for now. Stay tune for our review of the MyPhone Uno in a couple weeks.
