Senators asked the wrong question

Sen. Grace Poe chairs hearing on Mamasapano carnage.

It was President Aquino who informed Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin, Armed Forces Chief Gen. Gregorio Catapang and the rest of the presidential party in Zamboanga on the Mamasapano debacle on Jan. 25, a source close to Malacañang said.

That’s why in the hearings in the Senate and the House of Representatives the three and Lt. Gen. Rustico Guerrero, chief of Western Mindanao Command said they didn’t inform Aquino of the dawn carnage that left 44 members of the Special Action Force dead when they were with him throughout the day.

Interior Secretary Mar Roxas and Defense Secretarty Voltaire Gazmin say they didn't tell the President even if they were getting reports of the debacle.

Interior Secretary Mar Roxas and Defense Secretarty Voltaire Gazmin say they didn’t tell the President even if they were getting reports of the debacle.

They all looked and sounded stupid or they thought the senators and the public were stupid to believe what they were saying. Gazmin said that when he learned of the encounter at 11 a.m., he felt no urgency to tell the President. Besides, it was a police matter, he said.

Catapang also said he did not inform the President. Roxas said he didn’t realize the urgency of the incident.
Only suspended Police Chief Alan Purisima did not take the “I did not tell him” line. He asked that he be given time because he needs “to seek clearance from the President to answer the question.”

Suspended PNP Chief says he needs permission from the President to answer the question if he told the President about the Mamasapano 'incident' and what time.

Suspended PNP Chief says he needs permission from the President to answer the question if he told the President about the Mamasapano ‘incident’ and what time.

That’s because it was Purisima who informed the President of the debacle before he left for Zamboanga that day. He arrived there past 10 a.m.

This information surfaced when I remarked to a friend/source that it was obvious that everybody is covering up for the President, who should be made accountable for the death of the 44 SAF commandos.

The source said, “The senators were asking the wrong question. They asked Mar, Gazmin, and Catapang when they told the President. The persons they were asking did not inform the President about the Mamasapano incident. It was the President who informed them.”

Oh.

So that was it. Roxas, Gazmin, and Catapang were not lying. Perhaps if they were asked the right question, something like , “Did the President inform you or mention to you anything about an operation against two high-value terrorists?,” they would have answered truthfully. Perhaps.

Let’s see if they will be truthful when the senators ask them the right question in the next hearing.

The President tells SAF he knew of the 'incident' early.

The President tells SAF he knew of the ‘incident’ early.

This is what the President told members of the SAF at Camp Bagong Diwa early hours of Jan. 30 which confirms that he knew of the Mamasapano tragedy early:

Trying out the Samsung Gear VR

Here at the Samsung SEA Forum in Bangkok, we managed to get a some time to try out the Samsung Gear VR at the exhibition hall. Announced back in September 2014, this $199 head gear pairs with the Galaxy Note 4.

Having tried the Oculus Rift before, I already had an idea about the Gear VR. The Gear VR is basically the same, only that it is powered by a smartphone (the Note 4) and not a PC which is the original concept.

The Galaxy Note 4 is hidden inside the compartment at the front. All the controls are found at the side of the Gear VR along with some physical buttons and a touch panel to navigate thru the virtual reality screen.

You will need to attach a separate headset, which plug sinto the smartphone, in order to hear the sounds associated with the VR world.

There were a lot of scenario collections — from underwater to space; I especially liked the scenes from the Mars rover. The image quality is very good, at least 720p in resolution, and very realistic.

The VR coverage is 360-degrees so you can basically turn around and still see the entirety of the scene. And because of the near-real imagery, you also get that additional perception of depth and sensation associated with height or position.

With a price tag of $199, the Gear VR is a nice toy or accessory to the Galaxy Note 4. Practical uses could include watching 3D movies, virtual tours (real estate) and gaming among others.

We still don’t have any idea on the release date in the Philippines though.

Hands-on: Samsung Galaxy E5, Galaxy E7

Announced on the first week of January 2015, the Samsung Galaxy E5 and Galaxy E7 will be released in the Philippines sometime end of February or first week of March. We had a short hands-on time with the E5 and E7 at the Samsung SEA Forum here in Bangkok last week.

The Galaxy E5 and Galaxy E7 are supposed to be a more affordable alternative to the premium-built Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7. With that, Samsung is using the usual polycarbonate materials on the Galaxy E5/E7.

The Galaxy E series seems to be replacing the old Galaxy Grand series which features larger display screens and decent, entry-level hardware configuration. The design signature is very typical Samsung which makes it really hard to identify because they all look the same. That includes a smooth polycarbonate material in glossy finish with a loud silver trimming along the sides.

The back panel has a soft matte finish with the protruding camera and LED flash. The dual-SIM version of the series will have a label “Duos” printed at the back as well.

The Gaaxy E5 starts off with a 5-inch screen running a Snapdragon 410 chip and 1.5GB RAM.

Samsung Galaxy E5 specs:
5.0-inch Super AMOLED HD @ 720×1280 pixels, 294ppi
Qualcomm MSM8916 Snapdragon 410 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 processor
1.5GB RAM
16GB internal storage
up to 64GB via microSD
3G/HSPA+
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 4.0
8MP AF rear camera, LED flash
5MP front-facing camera
GPS with aGPS support, GLONASS
Android 4.4 Kitkat
Li-Ion 2400mAh battery
141.6 x 70.2 x 7.3 mm (dimensions)

The Galaxy E7 is bigger at 5.5-inch running the same Snapdragon 410 chip, 2GB of RAM and bigger battery capacity.

Samsung Galaxy E7 specs:
5.5-inch Super AMOLED HD @ 720×1280 pixels, 267ppi
Qualcomm MSM8916 Snapdragon 410 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 processor
Adreno 306 Graphics
2GB RAM
16GB internal storage
up to 64GB via microSD
3G/HSPA+
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 4.0
13MP AF rear camera, LED flash
5MP front-facing camera
GPS with aGPS support, GLONASS
Android 4.4 Kitkat
Li-Ion 2950mAh battery
151.3 x 77.2 x 7.3mm (dimensions)

The Galaxy E7 has a single SIM or dual-SIM option but no LTE connectivity.

The Galaxy E5 and Galaxy E7 are expected to be released in the Philippines by the end of February with a suggested retail price of Php13,990 and Php15,990, respectively.

Samsung outs NX500 28.2MP compact mirrorless camera

Samsung introduced the NX500 here at the Samsung Forum 2015 in Bangkok — a compact, mirror-less camera with a 28-megapixel APS-C sensor that is capable of recording 4K videos.

The NX500 uses the world’s first 28MP, BSI APS/C size image sensor. At 28MP of resolution, it is the highest resolution APS/C size sensor available in the market.

The camera comes with a 3-inch display features a full VGA AMOLED screen which flips 90° and rotate up to 180°.

Samsung NX500 specs:
Type: Interchangable Lens Camera
Display: 3″ Super AMOLED w/ Touch Screen

Total Pixel: 30.7 MP
Sensor Type: BSI CMOS
Shutter Speed: 1/6000 – 30 sec., Bulb
ISO: 100-25600
Self-timer: 2 – 30sec. (1sec. step)
Burst shot: 9fps
Video: 1080p, 4K at 24fps
