Life Isn’t a Romantic Comedy – But It Can Be

Hollywood’s greatest gift to ambitious career women is the idea that you can find true love and have the spacious corner office. I realized this Friday night, when two girlfriends came over after work with pajamas and a hard drive filled with feel-good romantic comedies. A year ago, you wouldn’t have caught me dead watching a rom com; I’ve often dismissed the genre as purveyors of unrealistic expectations and false hope. Lately, however, I seem to have morphed into the kind of woman who can only enjoy films that end with a kiss between two lovelorn protagonists. (I have also since become the kind of woman that does yoga, is pseudo-vegetarian, and works 60-hour weeks. It’s funny how much people change!)

“You are going to love this one,” Maia insisted as the opening credits of Something New started rolling. Soon enough, we began squealing and swooning the only way girls do when romance with a dreamy male lead is unfolding on the screen.

Something New tries to tackle racial issues that inevitably come up in intercultural relationships, but I was too busy getting distracted by Simon Baker’s sun-kissed good looks to pay attention to how it resolved racial politics. The real value of this movie was that it reminded me of the kind of guy that I want and deserve: Definitively masculine. Free-spirited yet financially stable. Gets his hands dirty to create something beautiful. Adorable dog. But more than this checklist of attributes, what really got to me and my girls was the way he persistently pursued the aloof lady lead, and how present and aware he was about her thoughts, needs, and feelings. And that shit stayed with me all night.

something_newBrian: I want to be there for you, Kenya, I really do. And we can talk. We can talk about whatever you like. I may not always relate, but I can promise I’ll empathize. Can you trust that?

When you’re single in your late twenties, you become painfully aware of the fact that the dating pool is filled with emotionally unavailable fish. In general, most of the fish just want to go with the flow and fuck the lady fishermen. Once in a while you’ll catch a nice one that will stick around and play house with you for a little while. Then one day he swims off because it occurs to him that you’re a real person with needs and feelings, and he should probably do something about that having spent X amount of time with you, but I’m only a fish and how dare you expect so much out of me??

It’s not the grand gestures or cheesy declarations of love that makes the rom com male win the hearts of female audiences. Despite how ridiculously women in rom coms might behave, real life women don’t actually want that much. They want great conversation over a delicious meal. They want a hug, a kiss, their hand held in yours. They want a nap, a movie, a good morning text.

Rom com males are easy to fall in love with because they have courageous souls. Because they are willing to be vulnerable and fall in love without fear. Because they go out of their way to chase their object of their affection and show that she is worthy of being loved. Because they understand that the chase is worth it.

I look back at last year’s dating experiences and remember how I thought I was so modern and empowered for always making the first move. But I never gave anyone the chance to win me over. I gravitated towards emotionally unavailable guys because love seemed like a thing I had to earn by trying to prove to him, over and over again, that I am fucking awesome. Every time I watch a romantic comedy, I am reminded that love unfolds without proof.

I’m going end this with my favorite scene from Happy Thank You More Please because it is the perfect example of how everyone should be loved. To quote the movie’s final line: “Sadness begone! Let’s be people who deserve to be loved, who are worthy. Because we are worthy.”

Sam #2: It’s not easy to be adored – you in particular – you have a tougher time with it than most. I get that, but I want you to give it a try. Think of it as an experiment. I promise I will be very wonderful at adoring you, Annie. It’s an area where I think I got a great deal of talent. You’re worth the adoration Annie, you’re worth it, and the fact that you don’t believe it has nothing to do with whether it’s true or not. It is true for me, and that is all that matters.

SKK V2 hands-on, first impressions

Announced several months back, the SKK  V2 is obviously positioned to folks who aspire for the very popular LG G2 but could not afford the steep price. SKK came out with almost exact copy of the G2 running Android 4.4 Kitkat and offering it a much lower price of Php4,999.

The SKK V2 has a 5-inch display size that’s right in the middle of the G2 (5.2″) and the G2 Mini (4.7″) with an uncanny similarities, right down to the Rear Key.

Even the build quality, design and polish of the SKK V2 are almost indistinguisable from the G2 series. Aside from the huge SKK logo at the back, anyone who is not very familiar with the G2 would definitely mistake it for the original one.

The V2 has a removable back cover showing the battery and two SIM card trays the first SIM tray also doubles as a microSD card slot). Even the back cover has that distinct pattern with glossy finish that’s also similar to the G2.

Of course, once you boot up the handset, you will be greeted with the SSK logo and its custom UI that’s actually simple and clean. The 5-inch IPS display is a dead giveaway since the resolution is so low (only 540×960 pixels) you will definitely notice some grainy image and pixelation.

The UI is nothing fancy but fairly decent its almost as if they left Android’s vanilla UI and just replaced the icon-set with something slightly different.

Despite the relatively meager specs, the device feels snappy and responsive. However, once you fire up a number of apps and services, you’ll surely notice the handset experiencing the heavy load.

We ran our usual set of benchmarks and got these scores.

Antutu Benchmark:
Quadrant Standard:
Nenamark 2:
Vellamo:

The results are not impressive by any means yet decent enough to show a little bit of power. We reckon at this level, users will not have any problems loading the usual social networking apps (Twitter, FB, Chrome) and games.

With a price tag of just Php4,999, the SKK V2 certainly competes with the likes of Cherry Mobile‘s entry-level handsets. And since that price segment is very competitive, SKK is banking on the idea that instead of releasing an un-inspiring design they’d rather imitate a popular one where people can easily relate to.

We admit, the V2 certainly looks nice owing its design inspiration from the G2. Whether this strategy by SKK will attract enough attention to the budget-conscious market remains to be seen.

SKK V2 specs:
5.0-inch IPS LCD @ 540×960 pixels
Mediatek MT6582 1.3GHz quad-core processor
Mali-400 MP GPU
1GB RAM
8GB internal storage
Dual SIM, 3G
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 3.0
8MP rear camera, LED flash
5MP front-facing camera
GPS with aGPS
FM Radio tuner
Li-Ion 2,500 mAh
Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

The SKK V2 has been around for several months in SKK stores and kiosks with a suggested retail price of Php4,999.

Updated: Starting February 13, SKK Mobile will be selling the SKK V2 for just Php3,999.

DataBlitz responds over SteelSeries issue, denies 7-day warranty

In an update to the what we’ve posted a few days ago about SteelSeries PH warning consumers of unauthorized resellers, popular gaming store Datablitz has issued a statement through one of its comments on their facebook page regarding the issue.

DataBlitz

Datablitz stated that they are offering full one-year warranty for all their SteelSeries products, and not 7 days as our source from the previous article originally reported. Here is their statement:

After going over the [Back2Gaming] article, our thoughts are that firstly, the author never verified with us on our warranty terms for Steelseries products, and just went with third party information, then posted up whatever he’s concluded from his own half-baked checking.

As you can clearly see from how it was written and presented, it is an unashamedly one-sided and biased article, and one which would seem very much written to favor certain parties or interests, whomever or whatever that is, your guess is as good as ours.

Just for your information and reference, ALL Steelseries products we sell in our stores carry a full 1 year warranty for factory defects and since we don’t really do any repairs, items returned for factory defects within the warranty period are remedied with a full item replacement. The “7 Days” the author is trying to hype as having been written on the invoice is likely just our store personnel’s way of informing customers that they can return the item they’ve purchased if found to have any defects within 7 days of purchase.

As no so-called local Steelseries authorized distributor here (none for the entirety of 2013 nor the entirety of 2014) has approached us to offer us their products since we started carrying Steelseries in our stores over a year ago, we have no other option but to source our Steelseries products from authorized distributors and resellers in other countries instead.

Rather than stoop to the level of the author, we chose to just explain our side to our objective customers, and let them judge for themselves on who is really being truthful here and who is being deceitful. We believe that at the end of the day, as customers check with us directly, they will realize that what was written in the article is plain misleading and inaccurate, and our customers will be the ones to pass the factual word around, something much much more reliable than the word of someone who’s just collecting receipts and taking photos from outside our stores, without even properly verifying the facts with us.

Thank you for your kind concern and hope this explains everything much clearly.

Despite the clarification, Back2Gaming updated their story and strongly points out that a SteelSeries PH representative reiterated that DataBlitz is not an authorized retailer.

Aquino announces he accepted resignation of suspended PNP Chief Alan Purisima last Friday, Feb. 6.

Aquino announces he accepted resignation of suspended PNP Chief Alan Purisima last Friday, Feb. 6.

Malalim ang pinagsamahan:PNP Chief Alan Purisima and President Aquino

Malalim ang pinagsamahan:PNP Chief Alan Purisima and President Aquino
