Cherry Mobile G2 First Impressions

Lazada Philippines

Cherry Mobile has recently announced the successor of the CM G1 Watch Phone and we thought of sharing our initial thoughts about it while we’re still prepping for the full review.

As far as design goes, the new Cherry Mobile G2 looks nothing like its predecessor. Gone are the sliding form factor with physical (and tiny if we may add) keyboard underneath the actual watch.

Instead we’re left with a respectable looking timepiece with a smooth rubberized finish and a 1.44-inch touchscreen display on the front. The latter is neighbored by three multi-purpose buttons that can be used to control the G2 or some of the features of the smartphone that it’s paired to.

Found at the top portion of the IP-certified smartwatch (IP54) is a VGA camera and a microphone on the other end.

CM G2

The wristband of the CM G2 has a commendable quality. One end of the wristband terminates to a piece of plastic with two locking mechanisms that latches on the adjustment holes of the top rubber wristband. This plastic strip also hides the male USB which is used to charge the device.

The other rubber strap terminates to a metal case back with two buckle tongues that latches on to the right wristband.

The touchscreen display of the CM G2 got a slight shot in the arm from its predecessor, but it’s still not at par with high-end smartwatches from international brands. In most cases, the touchscreen interface did a fair job of detecting and reacting to touch inputs, although there’s still a lot of room for improvements.

By and large, we’re glad to report that Cherry Mobile has picked the right smartwatch to be the successor of the G1 Watch Phone. On the design and build standpoint, the G2 is a relatively huge upgrade to the first model and has a more respectable appeal compared to the clunky and toyish look of the G1 Watch Phone.

Cherry Mobile G2 specs:
1.44-inch LCD display
4GB internal storage
VGA camera
Bluetooth
Pedometer
500mAh battery
Dimension: 228 x 38 x 15mm
Weight: 66g

The Cherry Mobile G2 will be retailed for Php1,899. Our full review should be up in a couple weeks, so be sure to check back with us for it.

O+ Time Unboxed, Hands-on

Lazada Philippines

Smartwatches have been on the rise in the recent months, and O+ wouldn’t want to miss on its current popularity as it banks on the a low-cost wearable called Time as a local offering.

The package is very reminiscent of time pieces we usually buy. The contents are also minimal, as it only has the smartwatch wrapped in a cushion, a microUSB cord which has a longer prong than the usual we see on smartphones, a manual, and serial stickers.

Upon a closer look at the O+ Time, the device is lightweight, and its colors may give an impression that it looks like a fancy sports or fitness device when seen from afar. The textured band doesn’t give off an impression that is a device you can buy for cheaps.

The notification panel features a OLED display that shows text and image in one color, reminiscent to the old phones of the yesteryear. The screen’s refresh rate seems to be different though, as we found it a bit hard to capture despite the perfect weather condition. The screen’s orientation, when worn, can also be a problem when read using the normal way we read the time off our watches.

Connecting the smartwatch to an Android phone is easy as accessing its menu (a press to go back/pres and hold to advance or select). You can call a contact, check messages, and notify you of alerts, but it needs a Bluetooth notifier app to fully utilize those features. The O+ Time is also equipped with a pedometer, but it is not as accurate it should be when we tested that function out.

O+ Time specs:
0.91-Inch OLED Display
Notifications
Text Message Reader
Hands Free Call
Alarms and Alerts
Bluetooth 3.0 + HS
Pedometer
Accelerometer
Li-Ion 150mAh
57.4 x 22.4 x 13.1 mm, 30 g

This new smartwatch from O+, along with another wearable called the O+ tag, is available for Php1,995.
