Philippines is subject to yet another supertyphoon, and our friends from Google and Globe Telecom and have a few tips to share to everyone so we could prepare as much as we can before we feel the wrath of typhoon Hagupit.

We’ve previously reported on Google Public Alerts that now warns Filipinos of upcoming typhoons. It not only does that but it also displays information about the storm as well as evacuation plans. This time, the crisis map for typhoon Hagupit has now been posted in addition to the main public alert page and ready to be viewed (just hit the links). Google Public Alerts is accessible through Google Search, Google Maps, and Google Now. Click here to know more about it.

On the other hand, Globe Telecom encourages us to charge our cellphones and other mobile devices in case we experience power shortages. The following are a few tips on how to conserve the battery life of our gadgets:

  • Log off or turn off unnecessary mobile apps or at least disable push notifications for nonessential apps
  • Turn off unnecessary radios such as GPS, blue tooth and Wi-Fi.
  • Switch off vibrate function and utilize ring tone instead.
  • Turn off sync function.
  • Dim LCD screens and shorten screen timeout
  • Minimize notifications and use phone only when necessary
  • Customers in areas identified in the path of Typhoon Hagupit should also make sure their respective lists of contacts are in order. Contact lists should include emergency numbers such as the nearest hospital

ASUS unveils VivoMini Desktop PC, starts at $149

Compact desktop PCs are slowly gaining traction in the market, and ASUS is looking to bank on its popularity as it unveiled two models under the new VivoMini product line.

Based on the information that Hexus gathered, the ASUS VivoMini will be available in three barebones models (no storage, no RAM and no OS) and one that’s ready to go right out of the box.

ASUS VivoMini PC

Under the VivoMini lineup are two models; the VivoMini UN42 which runs on Intel Celeron 2957U and the ViviMini UN62 which is powered by either a Core i3-4030U or a Core i5-4210U. The barebones variants can support up to 16GB of RAM and will accept mSATA solid-state drives for storage.

All models of the VivoMini will feature two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI and DisplayPort for video out, 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.0 for wireless connectivity, Gigabit Ethernet and SDXC card reader. All of these components are encased inside a Zen-inspired body that’s only 42mm thick and comes complete with ASUS’ trademark concentric circle finish at the top.
