Disqualify Binay to level playing field for 2016

VP Jejomar Binay did not present proof to debunk corruption allegations allegations against him.

All these investigations on the alleged corruption of Vice President Jejomar Binay are primarily to level the playing field for the 2016 presidential elections.

That’s because surveys showed that Binay is way, way ahead of other politicians who have ambitions to run for president in 2016.

When Pulse Asia asked 1,200 representative adults, 18 years old and above last June 24 through July 2, who they would vote for president if elections were held at that time, 41 percent said, “Binay.” That’s a good number. Analysts say that a presidential candidate has to have at least 40 per cent of the votes cast to win the presidency.

After Binay was Sen. Grace Poe with 12 per cent. As of now, however, Poe remains unconvinced about running for the top post especially if it’s primarily to prevent Binay from becoming president.

Third was former president and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada with nine percent. This is something to be concerned about which we will take up in future columns.

Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, the Liberal Party’s candidate, presumably the candidate also of Aquino, was preferred only by seven percent of the respondents. He had the same following as senators Chiz Escudero and Miriam Defensor-Santiago.

Senators Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. and Alan Cayetano, both vying to be the Nacionalista Party’s standard bearer for 2016, were each preferred by only five per cent of the respondents.

Given what seems to be the overwhelming advantage of Binay, the other presidential aspirants know that they have to improve their appeal to the voters in the next 20 months. They also have to pull down Binay.
Or better yet, eliminate Binay from the race to level playing field.

If one is to believe coffee shop talks about institutionalized corruption in Makati, Binay is one smart politician to have gotten away with it the past so many years.

But his political opponents want to make sure that this time they will get him. In the Senate, Cayetano together with Senators Antonio Trillanes IV and Aquilino Pimentel III are leading the investigation against the alleged overpriced Makati City Hall building 2.

Plunder charges have been filed against the Vice President and his mayor son over the Makati City Hall building 2. The Office of the Special Prosecutor of the Ombudsman has also revived graft and malversation charges against Mrs. Binay in connection with overpriced hospital beds in the Ospital ng Makati during her tem as the city’s chief executive.

Aquino, who has made the anti-corruption crusade his administration’s banner program, has tried to keep a distance from the demolition job on Binay saying only that “the truth will set us all free.”
However, he has stressed several times, in the presence of Roxas that he wants someone who will continue his “Tuwid na Daan” crusade to succeed him.

But it seems that even in his camp, Aquino cannot get everybody to join the “Demolish Binay” campaign. House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. doused cold water on impeachment plans against Binay saying a vice president cannot be impeached for acts he did as mayor.

This is not surprising.It will be recalled that in the 2010 presidential elections, one faction in the Aquino camp was Noy-BI ( Pnoy for president and Binay for vice president).

The Noy-BI supporters included Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa, Jr., who worked as city administrator when Belmonte was Quezon City mayor.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima last Friday told media she was not pleased that Renato Bondal, one of the witnesses against Binay who was placed under the Witness Protection Program, held a press conference reacting to the speech of Binay last Thursday, without the DOJ’s permission.

Binay, in his Thursday speech, did not present proofs to dispute the allegations of corruption in the Makati City Hall Building II.

Since congressmen are not eager to impeach Binay, another option to disqualify him from the presidential race is to convict him of plunder. Not just charge and imprison him because unless convicted, he can still run for president. He might even get sympathy votes. He has to be convicted and the conviction deemed final and executory

Those who want a level playing field for the 2016 elections have about one year and half to do that.

Cherry Mobile Cosmos One Review

Lazada Philippines

Cherry Mobile has come a long way since they entered the local scene some five years ago. And they decided to celebrate their 5th year of doing business in the country by launching a limited edition smartphone called Cosmos One.

The Cosmos One has caused quite a stir because of its sub-Php7k price tag that’s almost unheard of for an octa-core smartphone. In this review, we’ll delve a little deeper in to this handset to see what other things this phone has to offer besides its affordable price tag.

Design and Construction

In terms of its design, what’s a bit interesting is that the Cosmos One comes with what-could-be a faux leather back cover (like the Galaxy Note 3). However, upon closer inspection, it’s actually just some cleverly designed polycarbonate material that mimics the texture of leather.

Everything else seems pretty standard — the power button on the right side along with a dedicated camera shutter button. Volume rocker is on the left.

cm cosmos one philippines

The 14MP rear camera at the back is flushed almost near the top corner together with the LED flash. This is perhaps the reason why the camera shutter button is also positioned near the top end (for left-finger shutter clicking).

Display and Multimedia

The real estate at the front is mainly occupied by the handset’s 5.5-inch full-HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 2 laid on top of it for added resistance against scratches.

For the most part, the display delivered to our expectation. It’s not as gorgeous as, say the Magnum S, but it’s certainly not the worst out there.

Cherry Mobile Cosmos One

The viewing angles are decent on all sides, all portions of the panel were responsive to touch inputs and the color reproduction on the positive side. One thing we didn’t like about it though is that the brightness could use a little bump, especially when you typically use your smartphone outdoors.

As pleased as we were about its display, we can’t say the same thing about its built-in speakers. Not only was the output weak, the quality is somewhat below our standards. Well, I guess this is one of the things that CM (or the OEM) had to sacrifice to keep the prices down.

OS, UI and Apps

The Cosmos One comes pre-installed with Android 4.4.2 Kitkat right out of the box and feel really smooth and responsive. There are a few customizations made by CM and the rest are mostly from Android’s Vanilla UI.

Cosmos One UI

As far as pre-installed third-party apps go, CM added a Gameloft App store and TouchPal X on top of their usual apps like Pinoy App shop, Cherry Play and Cherry Fun Club. Sadly most of these apps cannot be uninstalled, which eats up a good portion of the phone’s internal storage.

On the bright side, users can pop a micro-SD in the phone to expand its default 8GB (6.08GB usable) internal storage and not have to worry about the pre-installed apps taking a bite out of the phone’s memory.

Performance and Benchmark

The CM Cosmos One comes with the same set of internal hardware that we often see on mid-range to high-end local phones in the market. As such, we pretty much have an idea on what kind of performance its engine can spit out.

cosmos one benchmark

We didn’t experience any lags when we’re navigating through the various menus or doing simple tasks on the phone. It was also able to handle 3D games quite nicely and the engine didn’t generate too much heat, making the backside warm in the process, when we we’re playing games on it.

nenamark

Camera

Most of the images we took using the CM Cosmos One’s 14MP rear camera were pretty good. The pictures came out with a decent amount of sharpness and contrast, although we noticed that the native camera app has a tendency to underexpose the shots by -1EV even though it’s set to ±0EV.

Having said that, it’s best to check your images first or just set your camera app to +1EV when you’re planning to take pictures using the handset’s rear camera.

Speaking of taking pictures, it’s good to note that the CM Cosmos One comes with a physical shutter button located just above the power button. The shutter button can launch the camera app even if the phone is on Sleep which is ideal if you want to take a quick snap.

However, we find the placement of the button rather odd and we think that most right-handed users will also find it difficult to use the shutter button when taking a landscape-oriented photo. And since the shutter key is placed near the power button, some users may also interchange the one from other at, especially during the first few days of using the phone.

Battery Life

The Cosmos One runs on a removable 2400mAh battery which, in theory, should keep all of its components, particularly its 5.5-inch 720p display, running for around 10-12 hours on a single full charge on light to moderate use minus the “always-on” mobile data.

For the most part, the battery managed to give us a decent mileage which was hovering around the 9-10 hours from full charge. It’s not that bad considering that we turn on the handset’s Wi-Fi from time to time to connect to our mobile hotspot and check for feeds on our social media account.

Cosmos One Battery

Above is the screenshot that we took after we ran our usual battery test which involves looping an HD video using MX Player whilst setting the phone on airplane mode and dropping the brightness down to 50% and the volume to 0%.

Conclusion

Cherry Mobile’s success in the local scene is primarily based on the fact that their devices have decent specs and are competitively priced. Both statements hold true for the Cosmos One which pretty much have the same configuration and price as the CM Pulse but with a slightly bigger screen.

Cherry Mobile Cosmos One specs:
5.5-inch HD IPS display with Corning Gorilla Glass 2
1.4GHz MediaTek 6592M octa-core processor
Mali-450MP GPU
1GB RAM
8GB storage
Up to 64GB via microSD
HSPA+
Dual-SIM capable (standard and micro)
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 4.0
USB OTG
14MP rear camera with BSI and LED flash
8MP front-facing camera
Miracast support
Li-Ion 2,400mAh battery
Android 4.4.2 KitKat
Price: Php6,999

This handset is a good all-around device that handles most, if not all your smartphone needs without breaking the bank. It offers decent performance, average camera performance, and a large real estate on the front for watching movies on the go. If you can let the poor audio quality pass by investing on a decent headset or earphone, we feel that you wouldn’t go wrong with this smartphone.

What we like about it:

* Respectable build
* Large and responsive display with Gorilla Glass
* Decent performance
* Dual-SIM
* Competitive price tag
* Good mileage-per-charge
* Decent Camera performance
* Physical shutter button

What we didn’t like about it:

* Below average sound output
* Screen brightness (a bit too dim)
* Most pre-installed apps cannot be uninstalled
* Camera has underexposes most shots

6 reasons why Filipinos shouldn’t buy smartwatches yet

Lazada Philippines

With the announcement of various smartwatches from different manufacturers, a lot of people are probably considering getting one – including me. However, I’ve given it some thought and I have decided that it’s not the proper time to buy a smartwatch, or to even plan to. Here are 6 reasons why you should hold back on getting one at the moment:

white-cookoo-watch

1. Dependence on voice control

If you’re getting into Android Wear, you have to know that a lot of the experience involves Google Now voice control. On the other hand, if it’s the Apple Watch you’re eyeing on, there’s Siri.

google-voice-search

Voice control is a nice thing to have, don’t get me wrong, but let’s be realistic; how frequent do you see Filipinos use Google Now & Siri? Or what about using their voice to type their text messages? You’ll have to use straight English / Filipino, and most of the time, there is a dependence on an internet connection too for analyzing voice.

But hey, if you find it okay to actually talk to gadgets in public, you can say “Sino si Steve Jobs” to Google and you have a constant internet connection for more functionality, feel free. Or you can get smartwatches like a Pebble which requires no voice control.

2. Google Now is not ready for the Philippine setting, and we should actually wait for Apple Watch coverage before planning to buy it

I’m a Nexus user, and as much as Google throws me Google Now notifications, I don’t necessarily find it accurate – it probably works better abroad, but not here. It gives me information on estimated time to get to my destination, but it was never accurate because of traffic, I want to get scores of UAAP teams and more, but it’s not ready. Soon maybe, but not now – and I’m saying this because Wear relies a lot on Google Now for the experience.

Apple Watch 2

The Apple Watch

For those planning to get the Apple Watch, it’s coming early 2015, but please don’t pre-order because we don’t even know what it will be like. In fact, I don’t believe in pre-ordering anything that has even the slightest hint of uncertainty – new game releases, new cameras and this case included. If it comes out and word gets to everyone on how it actually works, then you should decide.

3. No need to rush

It’s just probably the first or second wave of smartwatch devices to be announced, and you can always wait for the next launches if current offerings don’t look satisfying. Just because a lot of companies have already jumped into the bandwagon doesn’t mean we should as well. The market is just evolving, and I’m sure there will be better offerings in the future. Microsoft & Nokia has not even made any announcements yet.

samsung-galaxy-gear-watch

The Samsung Galaxy Gear

By the time an ideal smartwatch comes out, there will be enough straps, color choices, designs & software downloads to compliment it.

4. Compatibility

Planning to get into Android Wear? Check your Android phone to see if you’re running at least Android 4.3 Jellybean. Apple Watch? You need an iPhone 5 or better. Gear? Better have a Galaxy. Depending on which watch you’re going to buy, you need to pass the requirements first. Seeing that a lot of local smartphones in the scene are running old versions of Android, then we can easily say it’s not time to jump in the smartwatch craze for most people.

5. Sunlight legibility & battery life

It’s a nice thing that a lot of these smartwatches out now are waterproof or water-resistant, so that should at least take the worry off people when it’s rainy here in the Philippines. But if it’s scorching hot under the sun, then not only will you have a hard time seeing what’s on the screen of your smartwatch, but it will also probably heat up when you’re out a lot, and even before your day comes to an end, you’ll have no charge on your battery (some will probably do okay, but we’re sure that not all).

6. Price & Availability

MOTO360

Correction: It’s not time.

The Google Play Store is still not available locally, the Apple Watch is still not available anywhere, the Pebbles are hard to find and the buy is hard to justify at the moment, Samsung’s Gears are also hard to justify and will require you a Galaxy phone, then there are watches like the LG G Watch. If you want better looking watches like the Moto 360, you will need to pay a lot more as it is very rare and is currently unofficially priced at around Php20k. That’s a lot to pay for a smartwatch which is just starting to gain traction, but we guess you should just wait until companies officially distribute smartwatches to Filipino buyers.
