MyPhone fixes Apps2SD woes of MP Rio

MyPhone has recently released an over-the-air software update for the MyPhone Rio which, above anything else, addresses one of the more glaring concerns that consumers have with the budget handset; installing applications to external micro-SD card.

According to the local company, the software update will also “Put the System Update function on the Main Menu”, as well as remove some of the bloatwares like the PinoyPhone app.

To update your handset, navigate your way to Settings > About Phone > System Updates and select “Download and Install”.

Microsoft to rename Nokia Oyj to Microsoft Mobile

In a leaked letter to Devices and Services business suppliers, Microsoft announced that once the deal has been finalized on the 25th of this month, the software giant will drop the “Nokia Oyj” brand in favor of Microsoft Mobile Oy.

Despite of the rumored rebranding, the Finnish firm clearly stated that it will continue to conduct its other businesses (HERE, NSN and Advance Technologies) under their old company name.

Dear Supplier,

On September 3, 2013, Nokia Corporation announced its intention to sell substantially all of its Devices and Services Business to Microsoft Corporation. We anticipate the transaction to close during April 2014.

Under the terms of the sale, Microsoft will assume all rights, benefits and obligations of the Nokia Devices and Services business, including Nokia’s agreements with suppliers, customers and partners which pertain to the Devices and Services business. Therefore, the purpose of this letter is to update you that the current terms and conditions that you have with the Devices and Services business will not change.

Please note that upon the close of the transaction between Microsoft and Nokia, the name of Nokia Corporation/Nokia Oyj will change to Microsoft Mobile Oy. Microsoft Mobile Oy is the legal entity name that should be used for VAT IDs and for the issuance of invoices.

In addition to becoming a supplier for Microsoft Mobile Oy, we appreciate that you might also remain a supplier to the continuing businesses of Nokia (i.e., NSN, HERE or Advanced Technologies) after the close of the transaction between Microsoft and Nokia Devices and Services. Nokia will communicate separately any changes in invoicing methods and addresses before the close of this transaction.

ASUS Zenbook UX302LA first impressions

We currently have the successor to last year’s Zenbook UX301LA which is the more affordable alternative – the ASUS Zenbook UX302LA. It boasts a Full HD touchscreen display and an Intel Core i5 processor encased inside a sleek form factor. Read our first impressions on it after the jump.

ASUS Zenbook UX302LA 1

The Zenbook UX302LA is a real looker with its body composed of two main components — glass and aluminum. Upon initially bringing it out of its box, one would be introduced to its Gorilla Glass 3  glass lid that screams to be flaunted. It easily catches fingerprints, though, so it’s better to always have something ready to wipe it with.

ASUS Zenbook UX302LA 2

Open the scratch-resistant lid and you have the 1920 x 1080 IPS touchscreen display. This is actually a step down from UX301LA’s 2650 x 1440 screen resolution. The 13.3-inch screen is framed in metal and is razor thin at just 0.08 millimeters.

ASUS Zenbook UX302LA 3

The body features a back-lit chiclet keyboard and a clickable trackpad. They’re placed on the Ultrabook’s brushed aluminum body which feels solid as a whole and sturdy.

ASUS Zenbook UX302LA 4

Connectivity-wise we have the 3.5mm headphone jack on the right side, a full-sized HDMI port, USB 3.0 port, and a mini Display Port that also functions as VGA via the included adaptor.

ASUS Zenbook UX302LA 5

On the flip side there are two more USB 3.0 totaling to three ports and an SD card reader. In this aspect, the newer UX302LA beats its older model as it only has two USB 3.0 interfaces.

ASUS Zenbook UX302LA 6

Stereo speakers are located on both left and right side and is developed by Bang & Olufsen, the manufacturer behind high-end audio/video products we see today.

ASUS Zenbook UX302LA 7

The Zenbook UX302LA has a dimension of 325 x 226 x 5 ~17.2 mm and a weight of 1.5kg — thin and light enough to be carried inside its envelope-like jacket.

ASUS Zenbook UX302LA 8

Straight out of the box, the Ultrabook runs on Windows 8. Note: Notice how in this shot the glossy display already reveals a glare which could potentially be a turn off when using it outdoors. We’ll get into more of that if it indeed is bothersome or not during our full review.

ASUS Zenbook UX302LA 10

Based on our initial assessment on this Zenbook, it could definitely be something that you’d bring around when you’re mobile. It has that executive feel to it and its glass lid is striking enough to be sure to catch some glances.

ASUS Zenbook UX302LA specs:

13.3-inch IPS Full HD display @ 1920 x 1080 pixels with 10-point multitouch
Intel Core i5 4200U dual-core processor
4GB RAM
500GB storage with cache SSD
Intel HD Graphics 4400
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth V4.0
3x USB 3.0
HDMI port
Mini Display Port
SD card reader

Man, Cheetah, Wild

MAN, CHEETAH, WILD follows the true story of one extraordinary cheetah family, and the remarkable man who walked among them for a year and a half. A one-time game ranger with experience in the military, Kim Wolhuter is an Emmy Award-winning wildlife filmmaker who has an incredibly unique gift – the very special ability to befriend and connect with the animals of his native homeland, Zimbabwe. He connects with wild predators and dangerous animals in unbelievably amazing ways – living with them, drinking where they do, finding food on the move and running alongside them. Premiering Monday, April 27 at 8:00 p.m. (2000 hrs) SIN/HK, MAN, CHEETAH, WILD is a two-hour special that documents Kim’s unbelievable relationship with a young family of five cheetahs and how these ruthless hunters learnt to trust and accept him as part of their family, allowing him an unparalleled and intimate access into their otherwise elusive and highly secretive world.

M

Living in the heart of Southern Africa, Kim is a third generation bush ranger from a family who has lived and tangled with deadly predators for nearly a hundred years. Kim’s bush skills have gotten him up close and personal with many species, except for the mysterious cheetah – an animal that typically bolts upon sight. In the Malilangwe Game Reserve – 200 square miles of raw beauty that is home to a vast array of wildlife – in Southern Zimbabwe, Kim attempted to locate a female cheetah that he had previously worked and established a relationship with. Following one mysterious feline in 200 square miles proved to be challenging so Kim had a vet implant a tracking device in its belly. Six months on, Kim was unsure if the cheetah was alive having not seen her for that long. When he eventually managed to track her, he was delighted to find that she was mothering a litter of five new cubs.

M

Despite Kim’s gift of reading animals, there is always the possibility that one wrong move could cost him his life, especially in this instance where mother cheetahs are notoriously protective of their young and would do all it takes to protect their young. Miraculously, this cheetah sensed no threat from Kim and even allowed him an unrestricted and extremely rare opportunity to live and run amongst the family for 18 months, during which he was also able to document their daily lives and the upbringing of one of the rarest wild cats on the planet. The breathtaking and awe-inspiring footage is unlike any other as Kim does not merely sit in a truck to film the family; he wins their trust and runs alongside them barefoot, bringing viewers much closer into the covert world of cheetahs than anyone ever thought possible.
