Samsung starts production of 4Gb DRAM for mobile

Samsung Electronics has already started production of its 4Gb LPDDR3 mobile DRAM aimed at top-tier smartphones and tablets.

This new memory technology is the industry’s first ultra-high-speed four gigabit low power double data rate 3 (LPDDR3) mobile DRAM, which is being produced using a 20-nanometer class process. This process makes the device smaller which allows OEMs to use a 2GB package that includes four of Samsung’s new chips in a single package that is just 0.8mm in size. Note: 4 Gigabits = 512 Megabytes. 2GB package = 512MB chips (x4)

The 20nm-class 4Gb LPDDR3 can transmit data of up to 2,133 Mbps per pin, which is more than double the performance of the standard 800Mbps mobile DRAM (LPDDR2). In comparison to the 30nm-class LPDDR3 DRAM, the new technology is 30% more powerful but consumes 20% less power.

“By providing the most efficient next-generation mobile memory with a very large data capacity, we are now enabling OEMs to introduce even more innovative designs in the marketplace,” said Young-Hyun Jun, executive vice president, memory sales & marketing, Samsung Electronics.

Microsoft outs Skype for Outlook.com

Microsoft has recently rolled out its preview version of Skype for Outlook.com, allowing you to make Skype calls directly from the website.

skype_outlook

For those who aren’t familiar, Outlook is Microsoft’s Metro-inspired free email service that was launched last year. If you already have an Outlook account, all you need to do is download a plugin for your favorite browser (works with Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox) then connect your Skype account to Outlook. From there you can start making Skype calls directly from your inbox without the need to install a client.

The Skype for Outlook.com preview is currently being rolled out in Europe and in the United States. It will be available for other countries in the following months.

More insights on iOS 7’s new features

With WWDC 2013 just around the corner, more and more information/speculations are starting to emerge about the iOS7’s new features. Apart from “flat design” scheme that we’ve shared to you guys a month back, 9to5mac has uncovered a handful of new features that we could probably expect from the upcoming build of Apple’s mobile platform.

ios7

It’s been said that the iOS7 will feature a redesigned interface which allows for better multitasking and lesser device interaction in accessing commonly viewed information such as weather, feeds and the like. Moreover, Innsbruck (iOS7’s codename) is believed to sport a software-based polarizing filter which makes it a bit challenging for shoulder-surfers to see what you’re doing with your device.

From what we know so far, it seems that Apple is trying its best to still keep things competitive between its archrival Android. But amidst all of this, we’re wondering if the rabbit that Apple’s planning to pull from its hat is going to be enough to regain their place at the top of the OS war?

Cherry Mobile teases quad-core Skyfire 2.0

Successors to the Flame and the Omega are already out, but it looks like CM has another sequel up its sleeve, and it’s for the Skyfire. A photo on their Facebook page teases a Skyfire 2.0 that is supposedly quad-core like the Fusion Fire, the Fusion Bolt and the Flame 2.0.

QUAD

CM has been planning a lot of follow-ups lately, since they also teased another phone. At first, we thought that it was the next Dragon phone, but if you make out with the motion blurred text, you’ll definitely read Skyfire 2.0.

The first Skyfire hosts a 4.7-inch display & a dual-core CPU, running Android 4.0, and that sold for Php5,999. Aside from the confirmed quad-core processor, we can observe that the other devices in the teaser feature Android 4.1 & 1GB RAM – so there’s a high chance that this one will be similarly spec’d.

What do you think? Is it worth waiting for?
