No, no, no, to Gloria Arroyo beyond June 2010

70% oppose Cha-Cha to extend PGMA’s term;55% believe she is behind current Cha-Cha efforts

(Are you for or against a Charter Change that will allow President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to still be the chief official of the Philippines after June 30, 2010?).

The answer of 70 per cent was a resounding “No.”

SWS again asked if they believed “that Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is behind the current efforts to amend the Constitution in order to extend her term beyond 2010″ (”na si Pang. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ang nasa likod ng kasalukuyang tangkang pagbabago ng Konstitusyon upang palawigin ang kanyang termino lagpas sa 2010″) and majority (55 percent) said “Yes”.

SWS said opposition to a charter change that would extend Arroyo’s stay in power has increased from 66% in February 2009 and 64% in October 2008.

The most intense opposition is in Metro Manila ( 83 per cent). Opposition stayed high in all classes: it went from 69% to 73% in class ABC, from 67% to 73% in class D or the masa; and from to 64% to 62% in class E.

Majority in most areas believe PGMA is behind the current cha-cha effort

The Second Quarter of 2009 Social Weather Survey was conducted over June 19-22, 2009 using face-to-face interviews of 1,500 adults divided into random samples of 300 each in Metro Manila, Visayas, and Mindanao, and 600 in the Balance of Luzon (sampling error margins of ±3% for national percentages, ±6% for Metro Manila, Visayas, and Mindanao, and ±4% for Balance Luzon).

Heaven ‘n Eggs Michael Jackson menu

Heaven ‘n Eggs is the place to go to when one wants big stacks of pancakes or breakfast fare at 2 p.m. Honestly, I preferred its old look in Glorietta when it still had bright interiors, the wooden swing benches, white furniture and murals of clouds on the wall. It was more suited for the kids and the young-at-heart. I don’t know why the owners (Red Crab group of restaurants) decided to adopt the rock-star theme, at least for this branch where we go to. However, it sure clicks with some people like my music-loving husband. He does like the large posters of Jim Morrison, John Lennon and other rock stars on the wall, the music blaring from the stereo and also their food.

Heaven n Eggs

It didn’t come as a surprise, therefore, that HNE would be the first resto in the Philippines to come up with a special Michael Jackson menu in honor of the departed King of Pop. The food goes with names like….

Black or white – Double-stuffed oreo pancakes with white-chocolate vanilla sauce and cookies & cream ice cream (P235)

Beat It – three-egg sourcream scramble with chive and smoked salmon on multi-grain bread (P285)

Neverland – silver dollar pancakes with candy sprinkles, gummy bears, M & M’s and whipped cream (note:sounds great for the kids) – P245

Calling their meat dish Pepsi Burned Ribs seems awful, considering how we saw a footage of The Jacko’s Pepsi commercial recently. But yes, it’s described as “glazed pork spare ribs with Pepsi BBQ sauce, java rice and salsa.” (P255)

Don’t stop till you get enough … warm cheese fondue with sourdough bread, ham cubes and potato wedges (P320)

Thriller – dark chocolate, peanut butter and banana waffle, with raspberry syrup (P235)

plus a few others on the menu!

Here’s some filling dishes we ate in Heaven & Eggs recently:

Heaven n Eggs

Jim’s Short Skirts (P278)- beef strips and peppers in a warm tortilla with guacamole, refried beans and mango salsa, with deep-fried shoestring potatoes

Heaven n Eggs

Rockin’ Benedict (295) – Canadian ham on toasted English muffin and hollandaise sauce with grilled asparagus and shoestring potatoes.

Rating: value for money, comfort food!

SM Mall of Asia Hosts the 1st Philippine Figure Skating Championships

This could be another story of Cool Running. Remember the Jamaican team that was sent at the Winter Olympics? 2010 could be Philippine’s year.

Who would have thought that sending a Philippine team to the Winter Games in Vancouver next year is not really that a far fetched idea?

The first Philippine Figure Skating Championships which will be held at the SM Mall of Asia, will showcase the country’s finest figure skaters, both homegrown and overseas. More than 30 ice skaters from Pasig, Makati, Las Pinas to California and Arizona will converge at the Mall of Asia International Skating Rink to vie for the honor of representing the country at the 2009 Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf, Germany this September.

Competition is expected to be keenest in the men’s and women’s senior divisions where the champions get to compete with other great skaters all over the world in the last qualifying event sanctioned by the International Skating Union for the 2010 Winter Olympics to be held in Vancouver, Canada early February. Six more slots to the Olympics are up for grabs. If we make it, it would be a first for the Philippines under the Figure Skating category.

Sharing the spotlight with the RP figure skating competitions is the First Philippine International Ice Hockey Tournament 2009, a partnership between the SM Sports and Leisure Group and the First Philippine Ice Events (PIE) Org.

The event has drawn five teams from the Philippines, Qatar, China, Thailand and Japan, which aims to introduce local fans to the exciting and thrilling sport of ice hockey.

The hosts will be represented by Label 5 and the Manila Predators, who will be challenged by the Qatar Qanucks, Shanghai Red Guards and a composite squad of the Bangkok Flying Farangs and Tokyo Canadians.

While popular in North America, particularly in Canada, where it is considered the national passion, and Scandinavian countries such as Norway, Finland and Iceland, ice hockey is a growing sport and increasingly becoming popular even in tropical countries like the Philippines.

Both events will alternately be held at the 61 x 30 square-meter SM Mall of Asia skating rink, now considered among the top rinks in Asia, and are open free to the public.

These twin events will be alternately held July 19 and 20, (Saturday-Sunday) at the SM Mall of Asia.
