SEAir’s 2 new Airbus to be delivered 1Q of 2009, goes international

By Lynda B. Valencia

MANILA, Jan. 6 (PNA) ? Despite the spiraling fuel prices and incursion of the major carriers, South East Asian Airlines (SEAir) will acquire two new airbuses which are scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2009.

Avelino Zapanta, SEAir president, said this is the many firsts of SEAir this 2009.

Zapanta said the airline will also go international, noting that with the recent signing of the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) Open Sky Agreement, ?it is full speed ahead for SEAir as it plans to operate flights for Singapore, Macau, Incheon (South Korea), Bangkok and Kaoshiung (Taiwan).?

?In April 2009, we will fly to Singapore and Macau; on August, Bangkok and Hong Kong; and in September, we are looking at Incheon, Bangkok and Kaoshiung,? Zapanta said.

All new flights will use the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) in Clark, Pampanga, Zapanta added.

On November 28, 2008, flights from Puerto Princesa to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia was made available. The total routing of the operation is Clark-Caticlan (Boracay)-Puerto Princesa-Kota Kinabalu.

This is SEAir’s first international flight which also serves as its entry point to the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asia Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) market.

Meanwhile, Patrick Tan, vice president for commercial affairs, said ?We believe in tourism as the industry of the future for the Philippines and SEAir wishes to continue to contribute in the tradition of its pioneering effort that started 14 years and recently has been manifested in new services to Tablas, Daet, Baler, Basco and Borongan.?

Aviation records show that in January to October last year, more than 35 percent of all flights to Caticlan (Boracay) were via SEAir. There are at least four local carriers flying to the island paradise.

SEAir made 3,511 flights to and from Caticlan. This translates to 635 flights more than the nearest competitor.

To further boost passenger traffic, SEAir recently introduced a state-of-the-art reservation system where passenger may avail of the best online deals such as inexpensive fares for definite travel dates (FlySaver) and VIP tickets for those who require a good deal of flexibility on their itinerary (FlyFlex). All flights start selling at Php35++.

The airline uses a fleet of Dornier 328s and LET410 aircraft. The Dornier 328 is a 32-seater twin engine turboprop aircraft which is also being used by other airlines worldwide such as British Airways, KLM and United Airlines, to name a few.

On the other hand, the 19-seater LET 410 is ideal for small runways and other destinations where bigger planes could not land.

SEAir is owned by foreign partnership of Iren Dornier and Nikos Gitsis (40 percent) and the Filipino group of Tomas Lopez, Jr. (60 percent). (PNA)

Vigan Burnay: A showcase of fine Ilokano pottery craft

For the second time around, I found myself standing in the middle of hundreds of Vigan Burnay. And it was a sight to behold! The Pagburnayan is a place in Vigan where the famed Burnay Jars are made.

Burnay are large jars normally used in storing vinegars or fish paste more popularly known as bagoong.

Burnay Jars have a unique body shape. It has a small base, wide-bodied and small opening on its top.

Making these Vigan Jars aren?t just a cup of coffee thing. It takes almost a month to finish one jar and sometimes even longer especially during rainy seasons. It is said that the burnay-making industry already exist long before the Spaniards came. It is believed that the pottery-making industry was brought by the Chinese who once stayed in this area.

Visiting Pagburnayan is a must when visiting Vigan. One can actually experience to become an artisan here by trying your luck by making your own jars, and pf course for posterity?s sake.

Unfortunately, they were not making real burnay jars when we went there. But the staff willingly obliged to make a jar for me to take photos?

Outside the place where these jars are actually made, is a souvenir shop where one can buy small gifts (pasalubong) to friends and families.

To go to Pagburnayan, just hail a tricycle and tell the driver to bring you to Pagburnayan. No need to let the driver wait, since there are a lot of tricycles passing by that also goes back to the City Plaza area.

CebuPacific Air drops Fuel & Insurance Sucharges

Starting today, January 7, 2009, Cebu Pacific Air will remove fuel and insurance surcharges for all domestic flight bookings. This is good news to all passengers looking to travel with CEB domestic flights.

Candice Iyog, CEB spokesman, said, “We are committed to offering the public the most affordable fares coupled with the newest planes. In fact, we have made air travel a viable option for those who would normally travel by bus or ferry. We will continue to give EveryJuan more reasons to fly as we expect to take delivery of six brand new aircraft in 2009.”

The removal of fuel and insurance surcharges will now allow passengers to easily compare airfare with the fares of buses and ferries.

The airline also cuts its fuel and insurance surcharge for select international routes. CEB’s Manila-Bangkok and Clark-Bangkok one-way surcharges are slashed from $80 to $50 and $80 to $60, respectively.

Moreover, CEB’s Manila-Osaka one-way surcharges are lowered from $105 to $100 and Manila-Hong Kong surcharges are reduced from $45 to $40 per way.
